A breathtaking collision of classical antiquity and contemporary raw expression, it is a monument to the very act of creation.
Javier Marín (b. 1962)
Carved Pietrasanta Marble

Conceived 2000 / Carved 2008
While Javier Marín is globally celebrated for his dynamic works in bronze and resin, his ventures into stone are exceptionally rare, with others notably including wood & metal, a close example is the alterpiece Mesa de Altar del Presbiterio (Cathedral of Zacatecas), 2010. Cabeza de Mujer represents a unique opportunity to acquire a masterwork in one of the world's most historically significant materials: Pietrasanta marble.
Sourced from the very same region that supplied Michelangelo, this piece was meticulously carved at the renowned Marble Studio Nicola Stagetti in Italy. The sheer scale and weight of the work command the space it occupies, merging Marín’s signature visceral style with the pristine permanence of classical marble.
What truly elevates Cabeza de Mujer from a mere portrait to a museum-quality triumph is Marín’s deliberate retention of the sculpting process.
Look closely at the surface: Marín has intentionally left the macchiette, the raised rectangular pegs and pointing holes used by stonecarvers to transfer a design from a plaster cast to marble. By refusing to polish away these raw, foundational marks, Marín leaves the sculpture in a perpetual state of "becoming." It is an intentional disruption of classical perfection, offering the viewer an intimate look into the dialogue between the artist, the artisan, and the stone.
"The inscription 'PIETRASANTA' roughly carved into the back of the neck is a proud stamp of this lineage. The technical difficulty of replicating his signature 'fragmented' style (which happens naturally when casting bronze or resin in pieces) into a reductive medium like stone requires immense, masterful carving."
Javier Marín is currently shaping the architectural future of Europe, shortlisted to design the monumental Glory Façade of Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família in Barcelona.
The timing of this acquisition is highly strategic. The art world's focus is currently pivoting toward Barcelona for the June 2026 completion of the Jesus Tower, an event synchronized to honor the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death. Regardless of the final execution matrix chosen by the Sagrada Família's board, Marín’s confirmed placement on this historic shortlist guarantees immense institutional visibility and scholarly re-evaluation of his monumental works over the next decade.
