Celebrated photographer, Cyanotype printmaker, and analog vanguard.
Born in Ukraine and moving to New York City at age two, Yana Toyber’s artistic career was forged in the discipline of the New York City Ballet, where she performed as a dancer starting at age eleven. This foundational experience with bodily grace and grit manifests today in her "dreamy yet pragmatic" photographic style, which celebrates the fearless ways of women.
A recipient of the Kodak Eastman House and NFAA Awards, Toyber earned her BFA from New York’s School of Visual Arts. Her work, appearing in Vanity Fair, W, Juxtapoz, and Nylon, frequently explores the intersections of feminism, biology, and bodies of water. As a leader in third-wave feminist art, she famously orchestrated the Project 4 Sale collective, using female muses to reclaim the gaze.
Toyber’s technical mastery spans Polaroid, medium format, and 35mm film, often taking her lens underwater to capture otherworldly celebrations of femininity. Her book, This Time (2015), has been exhibited at the MoMA PS1 and Geffen Contemporary MOCA LA book fairs, cementing her status in the contemporary analog archive.
Unlike digital photography, Toyber’s work embraces unpredictability. In her "Little Odessa" series, she uses SX-70 Polaroids to preserve fragments of identity in Brighton Beach. The result is a fragile, subjective geography of memory that provides a stark, museum-quality differentiation from standard prints.
