Dark room. Moody. Tucked away in central London on a sweltering summer night, Piano Smithfield hosted a very intimate evening. The heat outside, the darkness inside - it felt like being transported in time.

Just Paul and Louis Jacobi. Acoustic, piano, raw rousing vocals. That was it and that was everything. A stripped back window into a band that usually fills a room with five members, layers of dynamic guitars, anthem choruses - a full dark gothic rock sound. But last night, two was enough. More than enough.

Paul Shine - frontman, songwriter. Mark the name down. His voice is raw and resounding, gothic and grand, the kind that makes you think of Queen but darker. Louis strummed with a mess of hair, adding critical depth. Hungrier for the big stages and big shows that - once you've been in the room and felt that palpable energy - you know they'll get.

The lyrics come from somewhere deep. Paul began studying English literature before music pulled him back entirely, and that love of language never left. He draws inspiration from Rimbaud, Dostoyevsky and Hermann Hesse - and you feel it. Questions of existence, romance, emotional unrest, all filtered through vivid poetic imagery.

Heartfelt without trying to be. You feel it before you've even processed the words. "Music is a visual language for me," he said. "Each song is a canvas."

Their influences draw on the melodies of Queen, the mystique of Led Zeppelin, the melancholy of The Cure, and most importantly the dark swagger of The Cult… Yet Dead Writers are their own thing entirely, and may I say it.. Better? Rock and roll drenched in literary references and gothic fire. Nick Cave called them astonishing. He wasn't wrong.

There's a true wrongness about them. Something special. You don't see it often. Paul hugged me at the end of the set. Genuine old fashioned rockstar - swag, charisma, the wardrobe, the presence, all of it. London rock scene through and through. And yet entirely real, entirely genuine.

In an era where TikTok views mean more than talent and everything is done for the clout, what Dead Writers are doing defies the new world order. This isn't a performance. It's a way of life.

They sold out a 200-cap headline show in London earlier this year. A debut album is in the works. A UK tour is coming. Go find them before everyone else does.
